The 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, has included water in its sixth goal, as a crucial priority, giving emphasis to the improvement of provision of safe access to water and sanitation, calling for increasing water efficiency, the use of Integrated Water Resources Management, trans boundary cooperation, protection of water bodies as well as human and institutional capacity.

The UNESCO cat.II Center for Integrated and Interdisciplinary Water Resources Management (CIIWRM) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) is organizing, in cooperation with relevant organizations, a Conference that will bring forward the various issues of water, into the framework of Sustainable Development, public and social responsibility and democratic function in the area of the South Eastern Europe. Issues of ethics, communication, and technology will also be in the agenda.

The forum/conference is under the auspices of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, and the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy.Relevant organizations, Agencies and UNESCO Water Centers and Chairs from the South Eastern Europe countries, are invited to participate and contribute. The idea is to initiate a discussion and make a synergy among agencies, scientists and society (social groups interested in water and water management issues).

The Conference will focus on Goal 6 of Sustainable Development SDG6, along with its various ratifications, under the title:
“Sustainable Urban Water and Sanitation: Public Goods in the Service of Society”

The Conference is co-organized by the following organizations: Region of Central Macedonia, Thessaloniki Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYATH S.A.), Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP S.A.), Hellenic Association of Municipal Water and Sewerage Companies (E.D.E.Y.A.).

The Conference is scheduled to take place in Thessaloniki on 21-22 of March 2019. All the participating agencies from Greece and the South Eastern Europe countries will update us on their progressonSDG6target of ensuring clean urban water and effective sanitation. They will also exchange "best practices",experiences and new challenges concerning sustainable urban water management for safer and more resilient cities. UNESCO will make its contribution as leader of SDG6. Finally, civil society representatives will be invited to present their concerns and questions concerning water security, ethics of water, efficiency, justice in access and similar.
